Resumo
Esta investigação de doutoramento de base prática (practice-based research) questiona como é que as arquiteturas e as paisagens das linhas da fronteira irlandesa podem revelar histórias sobre o seu passado e sobre o seu presente. A investigação parte de, e responde a, locais e histórias de uma fronteira contestada na ilha da Irlanda através de um método de “disposição alternativa” como forma de uma “prática espacial crítica” (Rendell, 2003); um método que utiliza a historiografia da arquitetura e da paisagem para criações artística site-specific. Composto por “fragmentos” históricos, materiais e espaciais (Benjamin, 1940) e as suas operações enquanto “lugares” e “não-lugares” (Smithson, 1968) “polissituados” (Kinsella, 2017), esta investigação procura produzir uma leitura plural num momento temporal crítico: o centenário da Partição na Irlanda e durante a saída do Reino Unido da União Europeia.

Tom Keeley (1982) é um artista-historiador sediado em An Sciobairín, na Irlanda, que usa práticas artísticas para escrever e repensar histórias arquitetónicas. Esta investigação com base numa “prática topográfica”, produz resultados site-specific diversificados que vão desde a escrita, material impresso e fotografia, até ao vídeo, instalação e performance. O seu trabalho tem sido exposto internacionalmente: Bienal de Arquitetura de Veneza, Salone del Mobile Milano, Bienal de Design de Istambul; amplamente publicado: Places Journal, The Architectural Review, MacGuffin, Domus; e faz parte das coleções da National Art Library e da School of Architecture Library da Princeton University. Abstract
This practice-based research asks how the architectures and landscapes of the Irish borderland tell the stories of its pasts and presents. It draws out and responds to sites and histories of the contested border on the island of Ireland through a method of ‘alternative arrangement’ as a form of ‘critical spatial practice’ (Rendell, 2003); one that uses architectural and landscape historiography as a method for site-specific artistic output. Composed of historical, material, and spatial ‘fragments’ (Benjamin, 1940) and their operations as ‘polysituated’ (Kinsella, 2017) ‘sites’ and ‘non-sites’ (Smithson, 1968), this research produces a pluralist reading at a critical juncture: on the centenary of Partition in Ireland and through the UK leaving the European Union.


Bio
Tom Keeley (b. 1982) is an artist-historian based in An Sciobairín, Ireland. He uses artistic practices to write and rethink architectural histories. This research-led ‘topographic practice’ generates site-specific outputs ranging from writing, printed matter and photography, to film, installation and performance. His work has been exhibited internationally: Venice Architecture Biennale, Salone del Mobile Milano, Istanbul Design Biennial; published widely: Places Journal, The Architectural Review, MacGuffin, Domus; and is held in the collections of the National Art Library and the School of Architecture Library at Princeton University.
